What is Participatory Budgeting?
Participatory Budgeting (PB) enables local people to decide on the issues that matter to them. Helping them to understand public spending, put forward their own ideas and vote on them.
It involves giving people a bigger role in delivering services too, and in ensuring public money is well spent.
It is more than asking people what they think. It’s a new form of democracy that brings fresh perspectives.
As a person with real experience of PB described it: "If it feels like we’ve decided, it’s PB. If it feels like someone else has decided, it isn’t."
PB Partners is administered by Shared Future CIC, a social enterprise with a track record in quality community engagement and development. Through PB we work closely with a range of democracy experts, research institutes and campaign organisations, such as The Democratic Society and Involve. We have collaborated with The Consultation Institute to deliver PB training, and with academics at the University of Westminster’s Centre for the Study of Democracy.
PB Partners provide support to the PB Network, an open forum for people who are interested in or champion Participatory Budgeting. It has a volunteer steering group and holds meeting and debates, both face to face and online through Facebook and LinkedIn, with the hope of deepening participatory democracy in the British Isles. Visit the PB Network website and find out more about how you can get involved.
